Jeff Mathis on Finance, Leadership, and Finding the Right Fit

In Brief

  • Jeff Mathis joined ProfitOptics as CFO in March 2025, bringing decades of leadership experience across finance, military, and professional services.
  • He’s focused on refining reporting, aligning processes, and fostering relationships that drive efficiency and growth.
  • Jeff is driven by mentorship, meaningful work, and relationships—with a side of Nashville hot chicken and karaoke.

A CFO Who Leads With Logic—and Heart

Jeff Mathis didn’t set out to be a CFO. He started his career flying helicopters for the U.S. Army, then transitioned to investment banking and financial leadership roles through a path grounded in math, strategy, and a passion for helping others grow.

“I didn’t grow up saying I wanted to be a finance guy—but it fits,” Jeff said. “I like solving problems, and I like helping people. Finance just happens to be a space where I can do both”.

Jeff’s arrival at ProfitOptics was a natural match of skills and values. His background in professional services, reporting systems, and delivery alignment made him a strong fit. But it was the people—and the culture—that sealed the deal.

“Once I met the team, it was easy. Everyone here is sharp and driven, but also collaborative and kind. That’s rare,” he said.

Bringing Perspective to the Numbers

Jeff’s current focus is on understanding ProfitOptics’ existing reporting structures and financial practices—then layering in clarity, efficiency, and long-term improvements. From monthly closeouts to quarterly reporting, he’s embedding structure while still honoring what already works.

“It’s about context first,” he explained. “You can’t fix what you don’t understand. So I’ve spent my first few weeks digging through historical data, client agreements, and internal processes to get the full picture”.

As the company continues to grow, Jeff’s perspective will help ensure financial strategy aligns with both culture and client outcomes.

Relationships Over Rigidity

While Jeff brings deep financial acumen to the table, what stands out most is his leadership style: relational, thoughtful, and humble.

“I’m not the stereotypical CFO,” he said. “Yes, I want the company to be financially successful, but I’m much more fulfilled by helping people grow—helping someone on the team get to a point where they could do this job someday. That’s how I measure success”.

Having come from the military and corporate consulting, Jeff understands structure—but he doesn’t let it define him. “I bristle at leadership that stomps people down,” he said. “You can have accountability without losing humanity”.

From Golf Greens to Karaoke Bars

Outside of work, Jeff enjoys life’s simpler pleasures: time with family, hitting the golf course, and making health a priority. He’s also a self-proclaimed “old-school music guy” with a soft spot for karaoke classics like Ice Ice Baby and Run-DMC.

“I’ve played sports my whole life, and golf gives me something competitive that I enjoy—but I’ve learned to play for fun, not frustration,” he said. “And yes, if you get me on stage, I’ve got a mean Vanilla Ice impersonation ready to go”.

Now based in his hometown of Nashville, Jeff loves the evolution of the city’s food and music scene—and his go-to favorites are Thai food and sushi, not the country classics you might expect.

Looking Ahead: Process, Progress, and People

In the coming months, Jeff is focused on refining financial practices and contributing to a strong operational backbone. But more than that, he’s here to help shape a company culture that scales without losing what makes it special.

“I want to add value wherever I can,” he said. “And part of that is being open—listening, understanding, and helping others succeed. That’s where the good stuff happens”.
